Oncoplastic Breast Surgery in Johannesburg
Oncoplastic surgery combines cancer surgery with plastic-surgery techniques. The aim is simple: remove the cancer with safe margins, and leave a breast that still looks and feels like yours.
Performed by Dr Nadine Broeze at Johannesburg Surgical Hospital, Randburg, Johannesburg.
What it involves
After the tumour is removed, the remaining breast tissue is rearranged to fill the space, or the breast is reshaped with a breast-reduction or lift pattern. Where needed, the other breast can be adjusted for symmetry.
Oncoplastic techniques allow larger tumours to be removed without resorting to mastectomy, and often achieve wider, safer margins than a standard lumpectomy.
Planning includes photographs, careful measurement and marking before surgery. Clips are placed in the tumour bed so the radiotherapy team can target the right area afterwards.
The practice provides a written quotation with the procedure codes; you submit it to your medical aid to obtain pre-authorisation before the operation.
When it's indicated
It is especially helpful when the tumour is large relative to the breast, sits in a position where a simple lumpectomy would leave a dent (such as the lower or inner breast), or when a woman with larger breasts would also benefit from a reduction.
The approach
As a woman, Dr Broeze understands that appearance is part of femininity and identity. Incisions are planned to be hidden where possible, and cosmetic outcome is part of the plan from the first consultation.
Recovery
Most patients stay one night. Expect bruising and swelling for two to three weeks, and wear a supportive, soft bra day and night for about six weeks. The final shape settles over three to six months, especially after radiotherapy.
Oncoplastic Breast Surgery FAQ
- Is oncoplastic surgery as safe as a standard lumpectomy?
- Yes. Cancer outcomes are the same, and margins are often wider. It simply adds techniques to restore the breast shape.
- Will my other breast be operated on?
- Only if you want it to be. A symmetry procedure can be done at the same time or later.
- Does medical aid cover oncoplastic surgery?
- In cancer cases it is generally covered as part of cancer treatment, including symmetry procedures on many plans. The practice provides a written quotation with the procedure codes; you submit it to your medical aid to obtain pre-authorisation before the operation.
